Olive walked up the many stairs that lead to the Pie Maker's flat. She glanced behind herself at Ned from time to time as he spoke. She noted the last word he said that his new place was, 'quiet.' That was probably the same way Olive could describe her new place. Sure she was staying with a friend from way back when but, it was odd not to run into Ned all the time or have Digby over. Everything was so different. Olive listen to Ned as he went on. "I usually spend my time in the shop," he voiced. "And Digby would too if people didn't find the sight of a golden retriever in a pie shop so disgusting. Even a clean one who values people's personal space."
Olive looked back at Ned and gasped. "Oh no! Poor Digby." she couldn't believe that anyone would think Digby was disgusting. "We'll have to change that. Maybe you can pretend Digby is your old seeing eye dog or, that you're his seeing eye master and that he's blind so you need to see for him..." Olive thought that might be a bit strange and added, "or you could pretend that you can't bend all the way over so Digby picks things up for you." They seemed to have reached the top despite Olive's short legs and Ned's lack of gracefulness. Olive waited for Ned.

Ned's lips tilted up wards as Olive offered suggestions to help his captive dog. When she suggested he pretend he couldn't bend over Ned let out a breath mixed with a chuckle, looking at her with an expression reading, 'you're so ridiculous but in a cute way'. A look he hadn't given anyone since... The look faded and he focused on unlocking his door, not wanting to realize that she had been the first person to make him smile in the longest time. It had felt tight and out of practice, but good. A pang of guilt ran through the Pie-Maker as he realized this, even though the guilt was unnecessary.
He turned the faded bronze door knob and opened the shabby looking door to reveal a shabby looking apartment. The floors were a scuffed and dusty wood, boxes lined the walls, and there sat Digby on the the box containing his dog bed. When he saw his master enter his ears went up and he hopped from his pedestal, only to stop as recognition hit the beast as to who was with him. The normally quiet animal let out a friendly 'hello' bark and wagged his tail excitedly as he rushed to Olive. It had been so long since he'd had a real petting.
Ned smiled painfully down at his best friend, a justified guilt entering him. He himself knew what it was like to be stuck somewhere you didn't want to be without anyone there for you and he felt bad for putting his dog through that, especially since he couldn't even reward him with an affectionate stroke at the end of the day. His gaze lifted to take in the melancholy room, with bare blinds blocking the view and a sad lack of color.
"It's not much but..." He started with a head tilt, about to say something like, 'it's all mine', or 'it's home' but in truth it didn't feel like home. He really didn't like his apartment. "It's really just...not much."

Olive noted the smile Ned had briefly given her. He didn't smile to often with just her, unless it was an exasperated smile. This smile though, was not that kind of smile...it was a genuine expression of delight, not annoyance. Although confused she found herself staring at him with a smile on her face as well. As his look faded hers did as well. She looked away and down at her shoes, sharply reminding herself of the past.
As the door opened Olive looked up into...an apartment devoid of color, not to mention nick-knacks. She blinked. It needed her help so desperately but then Olive spotted who they had come up there to see, "Digby!" she squealed with delight and immediately rushed forward and knelt down to pet him all over. "Oh, I've missed you too." She hugged the retriever and continued to love on him. Olive looked up at Ned as he described his dull apartment. She replied, "Well, I could help you add some color to the place and maybe unpack some boxes, I mean later in the week, if you'd like." Olive felt compelled to help this apartment go from drab to fab. It would be a public service to humanity and canine kind for her to do so. She also wanted to help her friends as she was sure Ned probably didn't really know anyone else in town. The pie maker tended to always keep to himself.
Olive was not really doing the best job sticking to her plan but she really wanted to see Ned and Digby again. Sure, Olive had made a few friends but she wanted the pie maker and his pet in her life as well. She wasn't sure it would be the best idea but, she quickly told herself that she could still stick to the plan. Ned and her could just be friends, easy peezy. She knew that couldn't be too hard as that's what she believed Ned really wanted.

Ned watched for Olive's reaction, actually wincing when she made no audible response but simply blinked. He knew she was following the 'if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all' rule, and sighed. "Yeah..." Was all he said, dragging the word out and rubbing the back of his neck self consciously. It wasn't like he had had an 'Olive approved' apartment before, but it had been better than this one room one bathroom hole in the wall. At least the view wasn't all that bad. The sky outside the dull little apartment was a radiant blue, startling in comparison.
Olive's delighted squeal brought him from his revere and he smiled and walked to their sides. He loved to see Digby so happy, he hadn't been this excited in weeks. His tail was wagging so violently his whole body shook with it. When she had knelt besides him Digby rolled onto his stomach, wiggling happily and grinning in a doggy fashion.
Ned watched for a moment, a smile illuminating his face too. It really was nice having Olive back in his life, even though he had been hesitant at first. He missed this. He missed watching Digby euphorically bark and wriggle under human contact, he missed Olive's quirky personality, he missed people. He hated to admit it, even to himself but he had been lonely.
"That'd be terrific." He replied, having grabbed a rolling pin from the nearby counter, and kneeling besides her. He poked the spare handle behind Digby's ear. The only thing he had unpacked was his innumerable baking utensils. He really took his job home with him, and because he had no extra work or anyone living with him he had been basically baking none-stop. He seemed to even be growing tired of that, though. Then olive showed up. Ned smiled at her, grateful to have a good friend again. "Thank you." He said genuinely.

Olive looked over at the pie maker after he had thanked her for her gesture of kindness. He was now beside her, scratching his dog behind the ear with a rolling pin. She still didn't understand the severity of his allergies to his canine companion or why Ned wouldn't take something for it. It was very perplexing to her but, Ned would act very strange when questioned about it so she generally left it alone.
"Sure! Anytime." Olive replied, still looking at Ned. She had a hard time not lingering in his gaze. She looked back down at Digby though and let out a slight giggle at the dog's expression. Digby clearly wanted her attention back on him. "Now, it's time for you to get some fresh air! Let's go find your leash." Olive gave Digby a scratch before standing up. She briefly glanced around the barren wasteland of boxes before turning to Ned and asking, "Did you unpack his leash yet?"

Ned looked at Olive blankly as he processed the concept of 'leash'. Not because he needed to think of them in particular or because he had forgotten what they were but because he couldn't remember the last time he had used Digby's leash. Perhaps in New York b.c. (before Charlotte), because he was a law abiding citizen, though getting the leash on was a rather difficult process. Olive then stepped in to walk and care for Digby, changing their relationship from co-workers to something like friendship for the Pie-Maker. The girl named Chuck had soon taken over caring for their furry friend and wanted Digby to be free, she hated the idea of tying anything to anything else. Her opposition to being leashed seemed coincidental now, ironic in a sick way.
Ned again awoke from his memories of what was and awoke to what is. He scratched his own head with the rolling pin as he thought and walked through his apartment, reading each box thoughtfully. "Um..." He voiced, filling the barren air between them. Digby had joined the search and was sniffing at the foreign pieces of cardboard curiously. Towels, Pillows, photographs, knick-knacks. "Ah! I- The Pie-Maker ripped open a tall box marked Dig~ and pulled out... A shovel. "Didn't find it." The shovel was placed back in his 'digging' box and he faced Olive once more, embarrassed that he was so unorganized in front of her.
"I'm not sure where it is.." Obviously. "Hes usually very good without one, though. Unless he spots someone he knows, or a French poodle or a squirrel." Ned shrugged and smiled at the obedient and faithful friend who had returned to Olive and once more rolled over, his investigation of the boxes over.

Olive cocked her head to the side as Ned stared off into Neverland. He was always so thoughtful. She wondered what he could possibly be thinking about. She had only asked him about a leash. He finally broke the silence with 'Um.'
He started to search for the box and Digby joined him. Olive began to look around at the various labels on the boxes that decorated the flat. All of the boxes marked cooking and pie had been opened but, hardly anything else had made it this far. Ned was just far too busy to do it all on his own.
Then the Pie Maker thought he had found the item they had been searching for. Olive looked over, only to see him hold up his prize. A shovel. Ned owned a shovel? This odd item was not the leash they had been looking for but Ned explained Digby would probably be fine without said leash.
Olive giggled slightly at the French poodle remark then she replied, "Alright." She smiled and looked down at her canine friend who was obviously begging for more tummy rubs. "Digby, do you promise to be good while were out?"

He had never been a funny person, so her giggle took him by suprise. He was used to people laughing AT him but not as often with him. Ofcourse, he had to remember that he didn't often make jokes, especially recently. The fact that he was smiling and joking with someone, making her laugh, that was rather startling. He would have gone off into thoughts again but was too caught up in the moment. It had been so long since he had spent time with someone like this. Digby seemed to be enjoying her visit just as much as he woofed happily and jumped to his feet, trotting circles around the pair, like 101 Dalmatians but without an actual leash so he didn't really bring them together, probably foiling his plan. Ned automatically stepped forward all the same to avoid brushing the dog and thus moved closer to Olive as if he had been lassoed to her. Ned looked down at her, the blonde's head reaching to his abdomin, her blue eyes joyful, cheek bones pronounced as ever. She was so beautiful and so close, and all he could say was, "I forgot how small you are." Tres Romantic. Not.
Then, with flushed cheeks, he moved passed her, careful to not make contact with her either, as was his habit, and opened the door for girl and dog. "Shall we go?"

Olive laughed as Digby happily responded to her question by getting up from his spot and walking a in a circle around them. She knew he was a good dog and they wouldn't have to worry about a thing. Her question was rhetorical but she smiled all the same at his answer.
She watched Digby as he walked his circle around them, going behind the Pie Maker who stepped forward as not to brush him. Olive didn't notice his closeness at first. She looked up into Ned's eyes, smiling. Her smile slowly faded though as she noted just how close he was. She could feel the heat coming off his body. It was like they were touching without actually touching. Her heart was fluttering in her chest and she felt as though she couldn't move, like time had stood still. Then, he finally spoke, "I forgot how small you are." And then, just as quickly as it had come, the moment was gone. Olive looked away and Ned stepped past her. She stared at the ground reminding herself they were only friends.
"Shall we go?"
She turned around, smile back on her face, "Lets." Olive turned to Digby, "Come on boy." She followed the Pie Maker out the door and back down the many stairs.
