Jude, upon calling for Mariah, had raced up the stairs two at a time so that by the time she had turned he was one step below her. In the back of his mind he recalled Romeo & Juliet's balcony scene. They were analyzing it in his English class, which he frankly didn't understand. What was there to analyze? A guy gets all romantic to a girl while she's on her balcony. End of story.
Jude's hand had automatically raised, intent on its purpose of revealing her face from behind her mask of hair. His movement halted when she moved it herself and he let out a soft chortle.
"Beat me to it." He replied, extending his arm anyway and touching a lock of her hair before grinning boyishly and spouting, "But soft! What light through yonder window breaks? It is the East, and Mariah is the sun!" He had never been good at resisting his urges and had suddenly found himself possessed by Romeo. It was such a perfect moment for it, with him lunging up the stairs dramatically for this line and her looking all gorgeous above him. He slowly rose and self consciously pocketed his hands, giving her one last sheepish smile before turning to go downstairs. "Be careful of the 'envious moon', Mariah. Sharpay's something else."
Jude was now back in the hallway and he allowed one more glance her way before saying, "See you later."
